Restoring, repairing, and enhancing natural, cultural and social ecosystems.
"Our world is finite, and so is tourism."
– Jordi Gascón and Ernest Cañadas
The travel industry generates around one-tenth of the greenhouse gas emissions driving the climate crisis and is highly vulnerable to the climate emergency.
While interest in regenerative practices is growing, the global tourism sector is also recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in increased investments, including demand for land conversion and housing commodification, and consequently, leading to issues such as economic leakage and social inequality.
Envisioning the benefits and possibilities of tourism as a local economic catalyst, as well as an experience to foster cross-cultural understanding and contribute to the protection of both cultural and natural environments; how can we shift from an extractive to a regenerative travel system? And how can the industry respond in creating a future of resilience?
This draft publication outlines the current state of tourism and its potential, supporting a transition to a place-based paradigm that restores, repairs, and enhances natural, cultural, and social ecosystems.
